200-ton ship engine falls off truck causing traffic mess


SAN DIEGO – A 200-ton ship engine being transported to General Dynamics NASSCO slid off a trailer and hit three cars on Harbor Drive near 28th Street early Thursday.
The fallen engine also broke a water line and prompted the shipyard to close operations.
The engine, which was destined for a Navy ship under construction, was being carried on a tractor-trailer rig escorted by some vehicles south on Harbor Drive shortly after midnight, police said.
It was traveling about 2 to 3 mph, when it shifted and slid off the trailer. It landed on a Dodge sedan, crushed the front end of a Ford Aerostar and hit another vehicle, San Diego police Sgt. Kevin Friedman said. Full Story MagazineLane.com
