Brothers used toy gun in robberies - trying to steal enough money to buy real gun

OAKLAND, Calif. -- A 19-year-old California man has been arrested in three street robberies that police say he pulled off using a toy gun. Police said John Hernandez and his 17-year-old brother, whose name was not released, were charged Friday, The Oakland Tribune reported Saturday. Sgt. Alex Perez said Hernandez admitted his involvement in the robberies, which took place between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 12:15 a.m. Thursday. His brother, however, denied any wrongdoing. Both were charged Friday with three counts of robbery. They were arrested after the last victim and his wife followed them to a gas station and called police -- who arrived just as the brothers were apparently preparing to carjack someone, Perez said. Some of the stolen property was found in the brothers' possession, police said, while other items were found at the base of the gas pump. Police said Hernandez still had the replica gun.
