New Zealand - Darryl Connor is no criminal genius. He worked as a tree pruner, but his attempt to branch out into cheque fraud ended quickly and badly – when he wrote his own name, address and telephone number on the back of them.
Connor, 31, now says he was in a bit of a slump and thought using stolen cheques for cash and alcohol sounded all right.
Masterton District Court was told yesterday how a mate gave Connor the cheques, which he knew had been stolen from a local business the previous day.
Connor stocked up on alcohol and cash from stores and liquor outlets throughout Masterton from June 9 to 13, pocketing more than $900 in cash and buying $152 worth of liquor before he was busted.
In addition to being caught on store security cameras for some of the purchases, he had also written his name, address and telephone number on the back of every cheque. MagazineLane.com
