Giant Rats loose - can grow up to nine pounds - were released by a resident who had been breeding them


Florida - Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Department of Agriculture workers began an intensive trapping session Wednesday on Grassy Key in an attempt to eliminate what they believe to be a dwindling Gambian giant rat population on the island. “We've divided the Grassy Key area into five zones and we're putting a greater density of traps in those areas for four days,” said Scott Hardin, FWC exotic-species coordinator. “We're putting as many as we've got, approximately 200 in each area at a time.” Gambian rats are an African species that can grow up to nine pounds and reportedly appeared on Grassy Key sometime between 1999 and 2001, when they were released by a resident who had been breeding them.
