California - A Foster City man has pleaded no contest to elder abuse for hitting his father in the head with a hammer because he mistakenly thought the 81-year-old man had to be hospitalized before he could be admitted to a nursing home. Jayantibhai Patel, 58, entered his plea Monday before Judge Clifford Cretan of San Mateo County Superior Court. Patel, who also admitted to causing great bodily injury, could face up to five years in prison when the judge sentences him Nov. 7.
