TRAVERSE CITY MI— Authorities requested numerous criminal charges against a downstate woman who allegedly was drunk when she crashed a vehicle into two local hotels and possibly ran over her own leg.
Grand Traverse County sheriff's officials have not identified the West Bloomfield woman, 67, who they allege first crashed into a garage door at East Bay's Sugar Beach Resort shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, then backed into another vehicle and left the scene, Undersheriff Nathan Alger said.
"She backed into it. The frame came out about six inches from where it was supposed to be,” said Cheryl Oliverius, hotel manager. "There were some dents and scratches on it.”
Witnesses called authorities with a description of the BMW sport utility vehicle and a sheriff's deputy soon spotted it on Three Mile Road just south of U.S. 31, Alger said.
"She pulled into traffic off of Three Mile against a red light,” Alger said, adding the deputy then stopped the vehicle on U.S. 31 east of Three Mile Road. "When he approached the driver's side of the vehicle, she sped off.”
The deputy followed the SUV to the Quality Inn parking lot off U.S. 31, where the woman allegedly attempted to get out of the vehicle, but fell to the ground in the process. Authorities believe she did not put the vehicle's transmission into park and it continued forward, rolled over her right leg and crashed into the west side of the hotel. Neckties
